Recorded during the New York stop of Mills’ Live at Liquid Room 30th Anniversary Tour, the performance will be released in two parts. Pt. 1 arrives September 25, 2026, alongside a set from Ken Ishii, while Pt. 2 follows on October 2, accompanied by a set from Joey Beltram.
The complete Jeff Mills performance will also air on Apple Music Club Radio. It will broadcast on September 25 at 7 p.m. PT.
A 30-Year Vision Comes Full Circle
The project connects directly to Mills’ legendary Live at the Liquid Room. This show was recorded at Tokyo’s Liquid Room in 1995 and released the following year.
The recording became an important document of Mills’ fast, uncompromising approach to techno. However, his original idea went beyond simply recording the tracks coming through the mixer.
Three decades ago, Mills positioned multiple microphones around the Liquid Room with the intention of capturing the audience and physical atmosphere surrounding the DJ set. Technical and format limitations ultimately meant that the original release was reduced to stereo.
“I was trying to do this 30 years ago,” Mills told MusicTech. “This is what we were planning for.”
After spending decades primarily available through physical formats, Live at the Liquid Room was released digitally for the first time in 2025, exclusively through Apple Music.
Now, the Knockdown Center recording brings Mills’ original concept into the Spatial Audio era.
14 Microphones Inside Knockdown Center
Rather than simply spreading Mills’ music across an immersive mix, the production focused on recreating what it actually felt like to be inside the venue.
Apple Music positioned 14 microphones throughout Knockdown Center’s 20,000-square-foot main hall. These microphones captured the crowd and natural room ambience alongside the direct stereo feed from Mills’ DJ mixer.
The result places Mills at the front of the room while the reactions of the audience exist around the listener, preserving the perspective of the physical space.
“It’s a live recording. It’s not just music. It’s the ambiance of the room. The people. The wild animals are a part of it,” Mills explained to MusicTech.
Those reactions are an intentional part of the recording. Mills used his selections and transitions to provoke responses from the dancefloor, with those moments remaining embedded in the final Spatial Audio mix.
Jeff Mills Moves Through Techno History
Across the two parts, Mills connects different generations of techno. Additionally, he incorporates several of his own defining productions.
Tracks including “The Bells,” “i9,” “Utopia” and “Life Cycle” appear. They are placed alongside music from artists including Robert Hood, Surgeon, DJ Funk, Marcel Dettmann, Steve Bicknell, Joey Beltram, Setaoc Mass and Ø [Phase].
The recording also contains numerous unidentified tracks, making the release a snapshot not only of Mills’ history but of the constantly evolving music that continues to shape his DJ sets.
The Knockdown Center performance is the only show from the anniversary tour selected for a Spatial Audio release.
